Are big eye contact lenses safe?
Some types may lead to eye infections and blindness
Big Eye contact lenses are becoming more popular. First seen in Asian countries, they are being bought online in the US and other nations even though they may not be approved by the FDA or other authorities. Ever since their appearance in Lady Gaga's Bad Romance Video (which in actuality was CGI) people have been wanting to look like anime characters or have wanted to make their eyes appear to be all one color, or just have very large looking irises, but the problems associated with big eye lenses are more serious since they are bigger, harder to remove, and can harbor more bacteria and diminish the eye's ability to breathe. For these reasons, big eye contact lenses are not legally sold within the US by prescription, but they are shipped from overseas where they normally arrive safely to the buyer.
Notes and Special Information
Special note: Be very careful about contact lenses purchased overseas, especially for cosmetic purposes.
